In 1937 she attempted what would become one of the most ambitious flights ever attempted—a circumnavigation of the globe following a route near the equator aboard her Lockheed Electra 10E.

The journey would carry her across three continents, countless cultures, jungles, deserts, oceans, and nearly 30,000 miles of unfamiliar skies.

She completed almost the entire trip.

Then, on July 2, 1937, after departing Lae, Papua New Guinea, Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan vanished somewhere over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to locate tiny Howland Island.

Despite one of the largest search operations in aviation history, neither the aircraft nor its crew were ever conclusively found.
