Leg 12 — GOOY → GAGO Mission Cross the western Sahara to Gao, Mali, following one of the most isolated portions of Amelia's world flight.

📖 The Endless Desert The Atlantic disappeared behind them almost immediately. Within an hour, the landscape transformed into endless shades of tan and gold. There were no forests. No rivers. Very few villages. Only dunes stretching toward every horizon. Flying over the Sahara in 1937 demanded extraordinary concentration. Unlike coastlines or mountain ranges, deserts often offered few recognizable navigation points. Wind constantly reshaped dunes, making even maps unreliable. Fred relied heavily on dead reckoning, calculating their position through airspeed, heading, wind direction, and elapsed time. Amelia glanced outside repeatedly. Everything looked the same. The desert played tricks on pilots. Mirage effects created shimmering lakes that vanished upon approach. Dust storms appeared with almost no warning. Hour after hour passed. Finally, a thin green ribbon appeared ahead. The Niger River. Following its winding course brought the Electra safely to Gao. After shutting down the engines, Amelia stepped from the aircraft into air heated well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The silence of the desert was unlike anything she had ever experienced. It was beautiful. And unforgiving.
