📖 Every Legend Starts Somewhere Long before newspaper headlines called her "The Queen of the Air," Amelia Mary Earhart was simply an adventurous young girl from Atchison, Kansas. Born in 1897, she climbed trees, hunted rats with a .22 rifle, built homemade roller coasters, and cared little for the expectations society placed upon young women at the turn of the twentieth century.

Her fascination with airplanes did not come immediately. In fact, when she first attended an aviation exhibition in 1918, she admitted that airplanes "didn't interest me at all." Everything changed three years later. Standing at an airfield in Long Beach, California, a stunt pilot deliberately swooped low toward the crowd. Amelia later wrote that as the aircraft roared toward her, something inside her changed forever.

"By the time I had got two or three hundred feet off the ground," she later recalled, "I knew I had to fly."

She worked countless jobs to pay for flying lessons. Truck driver. Photographer. Telephone company clerk. Social worker. Every dollar went toward one goal. Her first airplane. By 1922 she had purchased a bright yellow Kinner Airster that she affectionately nicknamed The Canary. Only months later she flew it higher than any woman had ever flown before. More records followed. Then in 1928, she crossed the Atlantic—not as the pilot, but as a passenger. The newspapers celebrated her anyway. Amelia appreciated the publicity... but privately she felt she hadn't truly earned it. She wanted something more. She wanted to cross the Atlantic herself. She wanted to prove she belonged in the cockpit—not merely inside the cabin. She did exactly that in 1932, becoming the first woman ever to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The world watched. Little girls suddenly believed they could become pilots. Little boys simply saw another great aviator. Amelia preferred the second description. "I do not want to be remembered as a woman pilot," she once said. "I simply want to be remembered as a pilot."
