Modern radio equipment. It represented the cutting edge of commercial aviation. For Amelia's journey, however, engineers transformed it into something entirely different. Passenger seats disappeared. In their place came enormous fuel tanks. More than 1,100 gallons of fuel filled much of the cabin. Every available pound became range. Food remained minimal. Luxury nonexistent. The aircraft existed for one purpose. Keep flying. As California gives way to the deserts of Arizona, Amelia studies charts spread across her lap while Fred quietly calculates winds using little more than mathematics, experience, and a slide rule.

No GPS. No satellites. No weather radar. Every mile ahead will depend upon careful navigation. The farther east they travel... the farther they move from certainty.
