Leg 19 — OPKC → VECC Mission Continue east across the Indian subcontinent to Calcutta while documenting one of the longest inland flights of the expedition.

📖 Across the Jewel of the Empire The Indian subcontinent unfolds beneath the cockpit in breathtaking variety. Dry plains give way to winding rivers, villages, farmland, and great cities connected by railways built decades earlier. Amelia cannot help comparing the view to America. Different architecture. Different languages. Different history.

Yet from above, people everywhere look remarkably similar. Farmers work their fields. Children wave as the aircraft passes overhead. Smoke rises from villages preparing evening meals. The world, Amelia thinks, becomes much smaller from a cockpit.

Fred spends much of the flight studying weather reports arriving by radio. The monsoon season is beginning to awaken farther east. Thunderstorms have already been reported over Burma. Every decision from this point forward will require careful attention to changing weather.

Upon arrival in Calcutta, Amelia receives one of the warmest welcomes of the expedition. Aviation clubs present flowers. Schoolchildren line airport fences carrying handmade American flags alongside British and Indian banners. History continues following every landing.
