The announcement finally arrives.

Spirit Airlines is winding down operations immediately.

All flights are cancelled.

Customers are told not to go to the airport.

An airline that carried millions of people suddenly stops.

Across America, yellow airplanes sit exactly where their final assignments left them.

South Florida.

Charlotte.

Houston.

Columbus.

Philadelphia.

Chicago.

Orlando.

Newark.

Detroit.

Las Vegas.

And elsewhere.

Some remain parked at gates as though another crew might arrive at any moment. Nomadic's pilots begin spreading across the country to retrieve leased aircraft.

For Spirit employees, the reality is much more personal.

Jobs are gone.

Schedules disappear.

Careers that people expected to continue for decades end overnight.

Some of the pilots entering Nomadic's WhatsApp group now know something they didn't necessarily know when they joined:

They aren't helping Spirit reposition airplanes.

They're helping the aircraft owners take them back.

The airplane sitting outside your window in Columbus still says SPIRIT in enormous black letters.

But Spirit Airlines no longer operates it.

The next time its engines start, there will be no passengers.
