LEG 12 — THE BONEYARD (KGYR → KMZJ) Phoenix Goodyear → Marana/Pinal Airpark Mission: Complete the tour with a final short ferry between Arizona storage facilities, ending among the aircraft left behind by Spirit's collapse.

📖 The Last Yellow Wings The final flight is short.

There's almost nothing left to say.

Below you is Arizona.

Ahead is the desert.

Behind you are thirty-three years of Spirit Airlines.

The WhatsApp group is quieter now.

The frantic phone calls have slowed.

Pilots who only days earlier were flying passengers are updating résumés, applying to other airlines and trying to understand what comes next.

Nomadic did what the lessors hired it to do.

The airplanes were recovered.

Many were brought into the dry Arizona climate at Goodyear and Marana, where they could wait while owners decided their futures.

You descend toward Pinal Airpark.

The runway appears through the heat.

Touchdown.

Taxi slowly.

Then look outside.

Rows of airplanes.

And among them...

yellow.

Bright Spirit yellow.

The color was designed to make an airplane impossible to miss.

Here, surrounded by stored aircraft, it somehow makes the silence more noticeable.

You taxi into position.

Parking brake.

Engines off.

The fans wind down.

Screens disappear one after another.

For years this aircraft carried families to vacations, commuters home from work, children on their first airplane rides, frustrated passengers, excited passengers, tired flight attendants and pilots who built entire careers inside this cockpit.

Today it carried almost nothing.

Just two pilots.

Some paperwork.

And the final chapter of an airline.

Spirit Airlines disappeared on May 2, 2026.

But its airplanes didn't disappear with it.

For a brief and extraordinary week, a WhatsApp group filled with pilots—many of whom had once called these aircraft their workplace—helped carry the fleet on one final migration.

Not toward another hub.

Not toward another passenger.

Not toward another sunrise departure.

Toward the desert.

You reach up.

Battery switches...

OFF.

And for one more yellow Airbus—

the flying is over.
