LEG 1 — THE LAST NORMAL FLIGHT (KMCO → KFLL) Orlando → Fort Lauderdale Mission: Fly what appears to be another ordinary Spirit flight into the airline's South Florida heartland as rumors about the company's future intensify.

📖 Friday Night The gate looks normal.

Passengers argue over carry-on bags. Boarding announcements echo through the terminal. Ramp workers load luggage beneath the airplane. Flight attendants prepare the cabin.

Outside waits a yellow Airbus.

For the passengers boarding tonight, this is simply Spirit Airlines.

Few realize how close the company is to disappearing.

Spirit's problems didn't begin tonight. The carrier had accumulated billions in losses since the pandemic and entered bankruptcy twice. In March 2026, management was still publicly discussing a restructuring plan that anticipated emerging from Chapter 11 during the summer.

But behind the scenes, circumstances were deteriorating rapidly.

Aircraft leasing companies were watching particularly closely.

They owned many of the airplanes carrying Spirit's name.

And on this Friday evening, their phones began ringing.

At approximately 6 p.m. Eastern, Bob Allen at Nomadic Aviation received the message.

Get ready.

Spirit was still flying.

Passengers were still onboard airplanes.

Pilots were still wearing Spirit uniforms.

But aircraft owners were preparing for what might happen next.
