📖 The Airplane Is the Truck The cargo ramp in Anchorage doesn't look particularly heroic at six in the morning. A forklift beeps somewhere behind you. Cardboard boxes are stacked beside pallets wrapped in plastic. Someone hands you a manifest while another worker complains that the coffee machine is broken.

Your cargo includes frozen food, produce, diapers, mail, veterinary supplies and several boxes marked MEDICAL.

In the Lower 48, nearly everything aboard your airplane would travel by truck.

Here, roads simply don't connect much of the state.

Alaska's enormous distances and difficult terrain mean aircraft fill a role that would seem unusual almost anywhere else in America. The state says aviation provides year-round access to the great majority of communities that aren't connected by road.

Your first destination is McGrath.

As Anchorage disappears behind you, highways gradually become smaller roads.

Roads become trails.

Then even the trails disappear.

Mountains and wilderness stretch toward the horizon.

The farther you travel, the more obvious your job becomes.

There isn't another truck coming tomorrow.
