Muralhas de Faro

Official achievement authored by JimG008.

The old part of Faro, called Vila Adentro, is located inside an oval-shaped wall whose origin dates back to the Roman period, about two thousand years ago.

Deeply altered and enlarged from the 9th to the 11th centuries, during the period of Arab occupation, the wall still has from that time two albarrã towers that served to protect the entrance to Arco do Repouso (so named because, according to legend, King Afonso III rested there after conquering the city from the Moors in 1249).

Also of Arab construction is the entrance with a horseshoe arch-shaped door located inside the Arco da Vila.

Equally interesting are the octagonal towers built a century before the Muslim occupation of the city by the Byzantines.

The main entrance to the historic area has been the Arco da Vila since the beginning of the 19th century, an interesting example of neoclassical art whose authorship is due to the Italian architect Francisco Xavier Fabri. It has a niche with the image of Saint Thomas Aquinas and was classified as a national monument in 1910.

Despite the damage caused in the 16th century by earthquakes and attacks by English corsairs, and also despite the destruction of the great earthquake of 1755, the wall has survived until today and has undergone some interventions in recent years with a view to its recovery.
