Leg 7 — MMML → KSAN Mexicali → San Diego Mission: Extract Javier across the border and clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The Hardest Crossing The aircraft felt tighter now. Not because of space — but because of what it carried. Every system check, every radio call, every minor delay felt amplified. The margin for error had disappeared somewhere behind you, over the desert, and now everything moved forward on a single thread. Javier sat quietly, hands resting in his lap, eyes forward. Not anxious — just aware. He wasn’t running. He wasn’t hiding. He was crossing. Mateo stayed beside him, calm but focused. “When we land, I’ll speak first,” Mateo said. “Answer what they ask. Nothing more.” Javier nodded. Sofia leaned forward, voice low. “This isn’t just clearance,” she said. “This is scrutiny.” Mateo didn’t disagree. “Then we give them something worth clearing.” San Diego came into view — coastline, city, structure. A different world, visible all at once.But the hardest part of the mission…was still ahead.

You taxied to a designated customs stand, set apart from the main traffic — controlled, quiet, intentional. Two CBP vehicles were already waiting. Sofia noticed immediately. “They were expecting questions,” she said. The engines shut down. No one moved right away. Mateo stood first. “I’ll take this,” he said. Sofia stepped closer. “This isn’t something you take. This is something they decide.” Mateo met her gaze calmly. “Then I’ll make sure they understand what they’re deciding.”

Outside, the air felt heavier than it should. Two U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers approached — professional, composed, already aware something didn’t fully align. Mateo met them halfway down the steps. Documents exchanged. Questions followed. One officer looked past him — toward the aircraft… toward Javier. The conversation slowed. Then shifted. Mateo spoke longer this time. Not defensive. Not rushed. Just clear. Direct. From where you stood, you couldn’t hear every word — but you didn’t need to. This wasn’t about paperwork anymore. It was about justification.

Sofia stood at the doorway, arms crossed tightly, watching like every second mattered. “What’s he telling them?” she asked quietly. You didn’t answer. Because it was obvious. He wasn’t explaining a manifest. He was explaining why someone couldn’t go back.

The moment stretched longer than any flight had. Then— A nod. Small. Subtle. But enough. One of the officers stepped back. Not approval. Not agreement. But not refusal. Mateo turned. “Bring him down.” Sofia exhaled slowly. “That’s it?” Mateo shook his head slightly. “No. That’s just enough.”

Javier stepped down carefully. Not rushed. Not hesitant. Just… moving forward. The officers guided him toward the vehicles — procedural, controlled. Mateo walked beside him. Not leading. Not following. Just making sure he wasn’t alone.
