📖 The Recording The return flight to Tromsø is quieter than any previous leg. Somewhere over the Greenland Sea, the final recovered recording is replayed onboard for the senior researchers. Hidden beneath layers of interference is a transmission timestamped only hours before the original Soviet evacuation decades earlier. The voice is fragmented, panicked, partially drowned beneath alarms, but one sentence cuts through clearly enough for everyone listening to hear it: “It is still transmitting after shutdown.” Nobody says anything after the recording ends. Because the implication settles over the cabin all at once—whatever is operating at the station may never have stopped.
