VASP - Viação Aérea São Paulo / São Paulo Airways
Founded in 1933 by a society of businessmen from state of São Paulo, VASP operated its first flight routes with Monospar and De Havilland DH-84. After some infrastructure and economic problems, the company was acquired by the State of São Paulo, to which it belonged until 1989. As a state owned company, VASP acquired Junkers-52 and DC-3 aircrafts in the 1930s and 1940s. In the next decades, the SAAB-90, Viscount-700, Viscount-800, C-46, DC-4, DC-6, BAC-1-11 and NAMC YS-11 aircrafts and, finally, in 1969, its first B737-200, the most used aircraft by the company and which would mark its operation in the domestic market. Nicknamed "the little tacky" (breguinha), the aircraft consolidated VASP as the second biggest airline in Brazil until its b̶a̶n̶k̶r̶u̶p̶t̶c̶y economical restruturation. During the 1970's and 1980's, the company also operated B727-200 and Embraer-110. In 1982, VASP received its 3 widebodies A300-200B2 for high-demand internal routes and some years later, the leasing of the firsts B737-300. With the global and national changes and new company's debt, VASP was privatized in 1989 and entered a period of routes expansion, receiving the 4 DC-10 and, sudenly after, 10 MD-11. A specialized cargo division was created, VASPEX, and received 3 DC-8-71F, 1 DC-10-30F and 4 727-200F. In this period, VASP also acquired controlling interest in the companies LAB, Ecuatoriana and TAN, forming the VASP Air System group. The expansion boom didn't last. With the devaluation of the Brazilian currency, its leasing contracts were broken in 2000 and the company returned to operating only with its old 737-200 and A300, along with just 4 leased 737-300 (the only ones capable of operating in SBRJ) until its b̶a̶n̶k̶r̶u̶p̶t̶c̶y economic reestruturation. In 2005, after most of its aircraft were prevented from flying due to lack of maintenance, VASP underwent a strong economic restructuring. A year later, leases were reestablished and joint operations with other old airlines was estabilished. A controlling stake in a major oil company gave the company the currency margin to operate its old aircrafts without leasing costs.
