In this story, we follow an older gentleman from Norway who, despite his age, still holds a valid pilot license and owns a small propeller airplane. With time on his hands and a sense of nostalgia in his heart, he decides to fly from Norway to the north of the Netherlands to visit his ex-girlfriend—someone who once meant a lot to him and still holds a place in his thoughts.
The journey is long but scenic, crossing over land and sea, eventually reaching Dutch airspace. Since there’s no nearby general aviation airport close to her town, the only viable landing option is a military airbase—the nearest location capable of accommodating his aircraft. Thankfully, after some coordination, he’s granted permission to land. The airbase is still around 40 kilometers from where she lives, but she kindly agrees to drive out and pick him up.
Their reunion, while unplanned in many ways, is heartfelt and warm. It’s a rare and slightly unconventional gesture, but one that symbolizes the kind of freedom and spontaneity aviation can bring—when used wisely and respectfully.
That said, this story is not meant to inspire copycat flights across borders to surprise an old flame. Unless you’re a licensed pilot, properly coordinated with air traffic control, and have strong personal reasons to make such a trip, it’s best to leave this kind of romantic mission to fiction—or at least to those few who are in the unique position to make it happen safely and legally.
Oh and the irony in this is that the man she left him for, works on that airbase, but is also now her ex ;-)
