Lurking on the windswept Kintyre Peninsula, Machrihanish boasts one of the longest runways in Europe. Built for Cold War readiness, it stood by to receive NATO bombers or emergency shuttle landings. Despite its immense scale, it never found commercial success. Today it operates as a private airfield—quiet, overbuilt, and overgrown. Landing here feels like visiting an alternate timeline where war preparations never ceased.
Aircraft Suitability: Airliner-friendly with ample length for A320/737. Extra Challenge: Touch down below 130 KIAS and stop within the first 5,000 ft.
