Short History
Established in 1926, Route 66, stretching from Chicago to Santa Monica, became an iconic symbol of American optimism during the Great Depression, offering jobs and hope to many. Its heyday in the mid-20th century saw it as the quintessential road trip route, lined with motels, diners, and quirky attractions. The construction of the Interstate Highway System led to its decline, and the route was officially decommissioned in 1985. Despite its closure, Route 66 remains a cultural touchstone, celebrated for its historical significance and its enduring place in the collective imagination of the American road trip.
We've all heard tales of Route 66, with adventurers conquering it in every mode of transport imaginable. Some have even chosen the scenic route on foot! But, being Fire Fly Air, naturally, we're taking to the skies to soar over its iconic path.
As the engines roared to life at DuPage Airport (KDPA), our journey embarked on the iconic Route 66 in the skies. With each stop, a new chapter unfolds.
DuPage Airport (KDPA): The adventure commenced in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, where DuPage Airport stood as a testament to modern aviation services and a bustling hub for eager travelers.
St. Louis Lambert International Airport (KSTL): Our wings then carried us to St. Louis, Missouri, where St. Louis Lambert International Airport welcomed us—a gateway to the Gateway City, steeped in history and a vital connection point.
Springfield-Branson National Airport (KSGF): Heading southwest, we touched down in Springfield, Missouri, at the Springfield-Branson National Airport—a hub nestled in the Ozarks, connecting the heartland to the world.
Will Rogers World Airport (KOKC): Oklahoma City beckoned next, with Will Rogers World Airport offering a central point for aviation services, paying homage to the humorist cowboy it was named after.
Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport (KAMA): Our journey continued to the wide-open skies of Amarillo, Texas, where Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport honored a Texan astronaut and facilitated air travel in the Texas Panhandle.
Gallup Municipal Airport (KGUP): Navigating the southwestern landscapes, we made a stop at Gallup Municipal Airport in New Mexico, serving as an essential hub amidst the stunning natural beauty of the region.
Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (KFLG): Arizona's Flagstaff Pulliam Airport greeted us next, surrounded by mountainous landscapes and offering a unique perspective on the wonders of northern Arizona.
Kingman Airport (KIGM): Continuing through the southwestern expanse, Kingman Airport in Arizona unfolded its wings of history, with ties reaching back to World War II, now preserving that legacy for aviation enthusiasts.
Southern California Logistics Airport (KVCV): Our flight path then led us to Victorville, California, where the Southern California Logistics Airport, once a military base, now played a pivotal role in the logistics and history of aviation.
San Bernardino International Airport (KSBD): Further west, San Bernardino International Airport embraced us in the Inland Empire region, a growing hub catering to the diverse needs of both commercial and general aviation.
Santa Monica Airport (KSMO): As our journey reached its crescendo, the final touchdown awaited us at Santa Monica Airport in California. Nestled in the heart of Los Angeles, this historic airport echoed with tales of aviation and entertainment that have shaped Southern California.
And so, the skies of Route 66 unfolded beneath our wings, each stop a chapter in the aerial saga that celebrated the rich tapestry of aviation history and the beauty of the American landscape.
