Greenland’s capital city, Nuuk (BGGH), recently inaugurated its new runway, now open to international flights. The original runway, which was just 940 meters long, has been replaced by a modern 2,200-meter (7,218-foot) runway. The first international flight to land on the upgraded runway was an Air Greenland A330-800neo on November 29, 2024.
Nuuk Airport originally opened in 1979 for STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) aircraft, predominantly Dash 7s and Dash 8s. The extended runway now accommodates larger aircraft, allowing airlines such as Air Greenland, Icelandair, SAS, United, and others to operate flights directly to Nuuk.
Previously, BGSF Kangerlussuaq was Greenland's only international airport. Reaching the capital required an additional flight via a STOL aircraft or helicopter. With this development, Nuuk becomes more accessible. However, some navigation and simulator data may not yet reflect the new runway. To ensure accuracy, download the latest updates provided below.
Flight schedules are arranged by descending distance, except for the first two flights, which commemorate the inaugural international service to BGGH and the new extended runway. The updated runway (04/22) features full ILS approaches at both ends, offering significantly lower minima.
Navigraph charts for BGGH appear current, and the Greenland AIP from the Danish Civil Aviation Authority includes updated navigation data, runway information, and procedures (as of November 28, 2024). Relevant details can be found on pages 513–589 of the AIP (with some blank pages included).
