1. Bingham Canyon

The world's deepest open-pit mine, Bingham Canyon is often visible to airline passengers flying in and out of Salt Lake City. Besides copper, it produces gold, silver, and molybdenum (try saying that 10 times fast!).
In an April 2013 landslide, 165 million tons of material slid into the pit. Fortunately, workers had been evacuated and no fatalities or injuries occurred. Heavy equipment was outfitted with remote controls so that unstable debris could be safely removed.
